Gmail down? (Temporary Error 502)

Gmail has been down for me for the last couple of hours, out here in India. Anyone else facing this downtime too? I’m getting the following message:

Temporary Error (502)
We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is currently experiencing errors. You won’t be able to log in while these errors last, but don’t worry, your account data and messages are safe. Our engineers are working to resolve this issue.

Please try logging in to your account again in a few minutes.

I wouldn’t really call more than 2 hours “temporary”. Someone missed their SLA targets!

UPDATE 1: Its weird, I get the following error now (choosing the HTML view does open up my inbox… its broken though since I have no vertical scrollbars?!?):

This seems to be taking longer than usual.

If you are using a slow Internet connection, you can wait a bit longer for this page to finish loading, or just use basic HTML view for now.

UPDATE 2: Its finally up after a 4-5 hour outage!

UPDATE 3: Its been 5 days since I wrote this post. But as can be seen from the comments below (and the traffic I am getting to this post), people are still facing this issue with their gmail accounts (I am not). This seems to be a user specific access issue, rather than a mass outage. It might be that gmail is performing some system/software upgrades. Being patient is the only way out! I did not lose any of my emails/data, so don’t see a need to be concerned as of now.

    i have been getting this error only when using the "send to" tool bar to send something to my gmail account using the right click drop down menu in a firefox web page. i do not get it if i log directly into email. does anyone know how to fix the problem

    The 502 error has unfortunately been a regular occurrence since March. It happens almost every month and the problem seems to become more frequent lately. Almost every time it takes more than 24 hours for Google to fix the problem.

    I agree with the earlier posters who stated that Gmail has been around long enough to no longer need be considered "Beta!"

  • I just posted this to my blog. This just went down for me and a couple friends around 5.15PM EST PM or so. Glad to see it's happening on a pretty big scale. Maybe they are going to add push support on the iPhone? I doubt it, but it help pass the time.

    Hi everyone,

    As you can see from previous comments to my post, this problem has occurred in the past. Not everyone gets affected by these issues, its very personal to your email address, potentially the cluster etc. Google hosts it on etc. For example my email is working just fine right now.

    Don't worry, never heard of data loss. Obviously you can email Google and report this, am sure they are aware and working on it. Try deleting all your google cookies and trying again. Corrupt cookies can potentially cause this too.

    I am glad I looked on to this and thanks for the one who started it. Otherwise I would not know about it.

    In Thailand I have had the same 502 error message for more than 7 hours and I have checked on firefox and normal server still nothing.

    its a bloody mess, I agree with the lady from Croatia, big bucks here what's the deal

    Like the other man said, would be nice if someone from goodle would comment.

    its also my primary email address and its been great, are there acces problems? I thought it was TOT as they alway are blocking u tube in Thailand as well.

    I get the 502 error now as well! I have not been able to access my GMail account for more than 12 hours. This is very frustrating since it's my primary email address account.
    I can however login successfully on GMail with a different account, so it does appear to be account specific.

    Other than contacting GMail support, I suppose I can only wait? The big question is, for how long??

    I have also been denied access with 502 errors, however, I am not complaining as GMAIL IS FREE. To the people complaining that their businesses are harmed by the outage. You should not rely on a free product for business needs and you certainly have no right to complain about it!

    well, it's nearly YEAR LATER and here we go again ...

    that is only true to the extent that one does not rely upon TIMELY access to email; such is in my case as an independent investor ... i rely upon TIMELY, ACTIONABLE RESEARCH that reaches my email box every morning.

    google is DIRECTLY HURTING MY BUSINESS today (march 24, 2008) with a repeat of the 502 errors today. of course, google will hide behind the flimsy "it's still 'beta'" excuse, even after YEARS of being widely available to the market.

    it strikes me that any reasonable person would expect a "statute of limitations" to hiding behind the 'beta' moniker. sure, the beta version of a complied run-time will always be the 'beta' as compiled ... however, once your web-based product, which is constantly evolving, has been on the market for particular period of time, it is incumbent to stop hiding behind the 'beta' moniker.

    i would suggest a VERY GENEROUS 36 months. if, after 36 months, you can move your web-based application from from beta to release, then your team doesn't belong in the marketplace; much less with an insane stock price (though i have made many thousands correctly viewing GOOG as a $200 stock, ever since the 650's). many developers i think would not even be so generous as this.

    this is just one more reason why the honeymoon is long over for the golden boys at GOOG. i'm about to lower my $200 price target to $180, on these repeated widespread outages alone.

    I too face this problem since 3 days. Sent mail to the Google team but nogo. I did not get any reply nor the issue got resolved automatically. I installed JAVA and encountering the problem after that. I uninstalled JAVA as I started getting Error 793 while loading the Gmail page. If somebody can give me a solution I'll be greatful.

    I'm having this problem currently, been about an hour. I see people complaining about downtime from anywhere between 1 hour and several months. Here's to hoping i'm in the former camp.

    Oh and to anyone that uses gmail for business, stop. Gmail is in BETA. that means it is not a finished product, and should not be used in any mission-critical situation. And at the very least you should have a backup. A yahoo or hotmail account that Gmail forwards everything to. If your business is important to you, don't rely on a free unfinished product for hosting your important business related emails.

    Had this problem (502) for about 20 minutes. Of the several different gmail accounts that I have, only one had this "error," so I decided to try a little test...

    I sent an email (from one of my other gmail accounts) to the address with the error, and as soon as I logged back on to that account, *Bam* I was in!

    Don't know if this will help others, but I figure it's worth a shot.

    I got it back in 40 Hours. I also got replies from gmail team for all my mails. so be patient and ask for help to gmail team.

    Temporary error 502 on my acc "admin.morph" too :D In Slovakia for 24hours too,technicaly support is fucked up(no answers) I use it for business,big money are in the game...i want compensations in cash...no kidding

    (Though it says it will resolve it a couple of minutes, its more than 5 hours now)

    The google problem continues... and this is freaking me out..
    I use this id for work and I am missing out on important work related mails.

    I think gmail is facing access issues. Would have been great if a gmail engineer/google rep would have commented on this post and clarified as to whats going on.

    I have some sobering news. The 502 error appeared on my machine about 3 weeks ago. I've written to GMail tech support, who thanks me for the information, but to date, I still can only get to Gmail via IE. Does anyone out there have any ideas for repairing this?

  • I am also getting this 502 error. This has been the first error I've gotten from Gmail. An rare error is excusable from anybody else but I thought Google was invincible. I hope they solve it soon.
