Of browser bookmarks and delicious

by Sumit Chachra on June 24, 2006

I increasingly find myself storing “interesting” links on del.icio.us. Most of these links simply do not belong on my browser bookmark bar. So what exactly is the difference ? What I have on my browser are things like my bank e-account, stock trading website etc. What is on my delicious account are things I am interested in and things I would like to take a look at sometime in the future.

Its a very subtle difference, but one that will prevent Google browser sync (which I find somewhat useful) from becoming delicious like. This means delicious will power social search, where as my browser bookmarks won’t (mind you, browser bookmarks can be very personal to people!).

Google notebook is cool, but I don’t find myself using it at all. For me bookmarks is more about just tagging and storing them, and less about writing notes on them and doing online “research”! The “note this” feature on the Google SERP is not so helpful either cause I want to visit the website before deciding if its worth noting.

Couldn't agree with you more Aneil. Give Yahoo! some more time and am sure it will figure out how to leverage and intergrate delicious in a manner that the regular user can also start using it! :-)
  • Sumit,

I’m pretty much the same way with delicious vs. bookmarks but one thing I’d mention here is that most people still don’t have any clue what delicious is. We have developed patterns and uses out of delicious vs bookmarks, but most of the market has not. This is actually a little scary for delicious because since the masses know Google and know favorites, they are developing their own usage patterns which will be aided by Google sync (once they figure out that firefox exists). I see it more as a race than “this versus that” when it comes to the widespread adoption of social bookmarks. That being said, delicious does a much better job than Google notebook does and between the two I’d definitely pick delicious. Time will tell which one wins but delicious has got to get into the mainstream a bit faster.
